Overview of Proposition 65
Proposition 65 mandates that the State of California maintain and update a list of chemicals known to pose these health risks. Businesses operating in or selling products to California must provide clear warnings about potential chemical exposures and ensure that no harmful chemicals are released into drinking water sources.
Types of Chemicals on the List
The list includes nearly 1,000 naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals. These chemicals are found in everyday items, such as food, household products, and personal care goods, including some fragrances and beauty products. Some may be present due to manufacturing or production processes, while others are by-products of motor vehicle emissions or pesticides.
Product Categories Affected
Items that may require Proposition 65 warnings include, but are not limited to:Â
– Products made from fabric, leather, vinyl, foam, synthetic materialsÂ
– Beauty and personal care products (such as perfumes, lotions, etc.)Â
– Glassware, ceramics, tablewareÂ
– Products containing batteriesÂ
Even though the presence of these chemicals is often minimal and considered safe by global standards, California law still requires the warning to ensure customer awareness.
